Deckhand / Server / Boat Crew (Seasonal March-October)
Job Classification: Part Time (20-35 hours/week)
Location: Portland, OR / Willamette River
Wage: $16-$24/hr DOE (plus earned tips)
General Position Summary:
Have you ever considered working on a boat on the river? Island Style Charters is looking for fun and friendly personalities to join the crew of our new tiki-style riverboat!
From March – October, we cruise Portland’s Willamette River while maintaining a tropical, festive and fun atmosphere for our passengers. As part of our crew, you’ll have the opportunity to work directly under a Master Mariner with over 40 years of experience on the water and learn valuable skills for life.
This is an active, hands-on role requiring physical endurance. Deckhands assist with boat maintenance, docking, cruise preparations, passenger service and vessel safety. When working as a food / drink and bar server onboard, you’ll also have the opportunity to earn tips!
This position requires a lot of flexibility, including routinely working long weekends, evenings and holidays. Our ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, outgoing, and genuinely enjoys working with the public. If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you!
Essential Boat Operations and Customer Service Functions:
This list is a summary of typical duties and may include additional responsibilities as assigned.
- Adhere to emergency procedures to ensure passenger safety is top priority at all times.
- Assist the crew with passenger check-in and reservation management.
- Assist passengers in boarding and disembarking in a safe, friendly manner.
- Assist the Captain with docking, mooring, & general vessel operations.
- Support the Captain with navigation and serve as a lookout when needed.
- Prepare for cruises by stocking food, beverages and supplies.
- Use the electronic POS system (Square) to take orders and handle cash/card payments.
- Provide great customer service while serving food and drinks with a fun, friendly attitude.
- Maintain vessel cleanliness throughout the cruise.
- Assist with post-cruise cleanup, garbage management, inventory tracking and re-stocking.
- Perform vessel maintenance tasks, such as hosing down, mopping, scrubbing the deck and hull.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly safety and operational checklists.
- Run company errands when needed (such as ice/food/beverage transport).
- Cross-train and fill in for host, bartender, server roles if needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- 18 years of age or older.
- Willing to work a flexible schedule including mornings, late nights, weekends and holidays. (Note: Shifts will typically be 6-7 hours long or 12 hour days.)
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Punctual and reliable.
- Subject to quarterly random drug testing per company policy.
- OLCC server permit: Must have or obtain before your first day of work.
- Valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation and good driving record.
- Will be required to maintain a current CPR / First Aid Certification.
- Will be required to obtain an Oregon Boaters Card within 30 days of hire.
- May be required to obtain an Oregon Food Handlers Card.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of USCG safety and training guidelines, or willingness to learn.
- Basic knowledge of Square POS or ability to learn quickly.
- Ability to follow OLCC alcohol service regulations for responsible beverage service.
- Self-motivated and able to work well with a team.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Active and fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to perform physical tasks, lift up to 50 lbs. and walk or stand for extended periods.
- Must be comfortable working in all weather conditions.
- Must be comfortable on docks, boats and walking on uneven/slippery surfaces.
- Basic swim skills required.
- Work requires the ability to balance on uneven, slippery surfaces.
- Must comply with USCG regulations and company policies at all times.
Supervision:
- This role is supervised by the Owners and the Captain of the cruise boat during cruises.
- This role is not responsible for any supervisory oversight of any other staff member.
