Riverboat Host / Improvisational Actor / Entertainer / Server
(seasonal May – October)

 

Job Classification: Part Time (15-30 hours/ week)

Location:  Portland, OR / Willamette River

Wage: $20-$40/hr DOE (potential for tips)

General Position Summary:

Do you have a background in cruise boats, theater or entertainment? Do you love being on the water, having fun and making friends? Island Style Charters is looking for friendly, welcoming and warm personalities to join our team as Aloha Hosts on our new tiki-style riverboat. From March – October, we cruise the Willamette River in Portland while maintaining a fun, tropical atmosphere on the boat for our passengers.  

This position is ideal for outgoing individuals who know how to get a party going. A typical cruise lineup will look like (1) welcoming passengers aboard, educating them on basic boat safety, explaining amenities,  (2) maintaining a safe, clean and comfortable environment, (3) provide food and beverage service, (4) Core Job: crowd entertainment, hosting games / activities and helping all feel included in the fun, (5) assisting with navigation and docking, (6) assisting passengers with safely exiting the cruise boat.

  • Assist with passenger boarding and disembarking in a safe, welcoming manner.
  • Engage guests in onboard activities, share trivia and sightseeing facts.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all passengers throughout the duration of cruise.
  • Assist with planning and coordination of  holiday and special event activities for passengers, ensuring seamless timing with the captain.
  • Assist management with cruise programming development to create engaging and entertaining content that aligns with the company’s brand, mission, vision and values.
  • Ensure proper setup for each cruise such as testing the PA system, preparing games, props and other onboard activities. 
  • Use the electronic POS system (Square) to take orders and handle cash/card payments.
  • During downtime:  assist bartender, bus tables, prepare next passenger activity, encourage and capture content for social media and ensure all passengers are having a good time. 
  • Provide great customer service while serving passengers with a fun, friendly attitude.
  • Assist Captain and deckhand with safety operations and procedures whenever needed. 
  • Assist with post-cruise checklists, cleanup, and  inventory management.
  • Cross-train and fill in for deckhand, bartender /server and other host roles if needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • 18 years of age or older.
    • Willing to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays. 
    • Excellent customer service skills. 
    • Punctual and reliable.
    • OLCC server permit:  May be required to obtain prior to employment.
    • Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation.
    • May be required to obtain a current CPR / First Aid Certification.
    • May be required to obtain an Oregon Boaters Card.
    • May be required to obtain an Oregon Food Handlers Card.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must enjoy mingling and entertaining large groups of people.  
  • Must be able to read a crowd and adjust activities accordingly. 
  • Basic knowledge of Square POS or ability to learn quickly.
  • Ability to follow OLCC alcohol service regulations for responsible beverage service.
  • Self-motivated and able to work well with a team.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Active and fast-paced environment.  
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be comfortable on docks, boats and walking on uneven/slippery surfaces.
  • Basic swim skills required (as a precaution).
  • Must comply with company policies at all times.

Supervision:

  • This role is supervised by the Owners (and/or Captain of the cruise boat while underway).  
  • This role is not responsible for any supervisory oversight of any other staff member.
